The Truth About Essential Oils in Skincare (and How I Use Them)

Have you ever wondered if essential oils really help your skin  or if they’re just another trend?

I used to think they were too risky to use on my face. But after some trial and error (and a few breakouts), I finally learned how to use them the right way. Now, essential oils are part of my daily beauty ritual  and my skin loves it.

In this post, I’ll share:

  • What essential oils are
  • The ones that actually help skin
  • How I use them in my routine
  • What to avoid so you don’t damage your skin

🌿 What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are strong plant extracts. They come from flowers, leaves, or seeds and are packed with natural ingredients that affect your skin, mood, and body.

But they’re very strong  using too much can hurt your skin. That’s why it’s super important to dilute them (mix them with a carrier oil like jojoba or rosehip).

💧 Essential Oils That Help Skin (I Use These!)

Here are a few oils I trust and love using:

Essential Oil Why I Use It
Tea Tree Helps with acne and breakouts
Lavender Calms skin and reduces redness
Frankincense Helps with scars and fine lines
Rosehip (carrier oil) Moisturizes and fades dark spots

Tip: I only use 1 drop of essential oil mixed into a teaspoon of carrier oil — and never apply them straight on my face.

⚠️ Oils I Avoid (Too Harsh for My Skin)

  • Lemon or Citrus Oils – Can burn skin in the sun
  • Cinnamon or Clove – Too spicy, may cause rashes
  • Peppermint – Refreshing, but too strong for the face

Always do a patch test before trying any oil. I apply a small amount behind my ear and wait 24 hours.

💆‍♀️ My Simple Essential Oil Skincare Routine

Here’s how I use essential oils at night:

  1. Cleanse: I wash my face with a gentle cleanser.
  2. Mix Serum: I add 1 drop lavender or frankincense to a teaspoon of rosehip oil.
  3. Apply Gently: I press it into my skin  no rubbing.
  4. Moisturize: I finish with my night cream to lock everything in.
  5. Relax: I sometimes do a light face massage with a jade roller or gua sha tool.

This routine helps my skin feel soft, calm, and glowy the next day.
